Tenant rights include living in a safe and pest free environment

When you move into a premises it is your responsibility to complete a condition report. The more thorough you are with this report, the more protected you will be. Checking for structural damage, smells, stains or other damage caused by termites or pests is an important part of your role.

If you notice anything that you suspect may be caused by pests or termite infestation it is a good idea to notify your landlord in writing.

This gives them the opportunity to arrange a pest inspection and undertake any necessary eradication and/or preventative measures such as termite baiting.

Can I arrange a pest or termite inspection for a property I am renting?

It is generally best to arrange pest and termite inspections via your landlord. It is in their interest to know if you suspect any kind of pest problem or termite infestation.

If you request an inspection and your landlord is unwilling, your best course of action is to contact Consumer Affairs Victoria to find out your exact rights and responsibilities.
